There was lots of positives to take from this years sale .

16 Flocks break the £1,000 barrier

Ring 18 sold 91.5 % of the total entered number joint top result on the day with Suffolk Ring 14 .

Trade was level throughout the day with strong lots selling from the first to the last without dipping .

Regular commercial flock owners travelled from all over the UK to again secure hardy commercial rams from noted flocks .

Hawick won the 1st prizes with Graham Cakebread Commonside winning the show and Ali Warden Skelfhill winning the best pen .

A tremendous run of strong commercial rams were keenly bid for from the minute Mr Jimmy Jeffrey Kersknowe rang the starting bell.

By the time the second ram of the day came in trade had already passed the £1000 mark and reached £1200 from Bowsden Moor.

Top price for the Ring was £3,000, fittingly from a great Kelso supporter JS Dun & Partners Catcune as this was their last year , selling to a well known local Texel breeder CD Scott Falla , Jedburgh .

At the show prior to the sale Crumhaughhill won 1st place and the champion which sold for £1600. 2nd place Bowsden Moor x £1200, 3rd place x Sharplaw Farms x £900, 4th place Sydenham x £1500 , 5th place Muircleugh x £600 , 6th place Catslackburn x £920 .

Trade was slightly easier overall than last year although there were a record number of high prices . 35 rams sold over £1000 with a fantastic 56 selling above £900.

The ring average was a very respectable £632.04 for 363 sold.

2017 Kelso Ram Sale was great, having our own ring, where we offered our best run of excellent shearlings who without being overfed looked great. Buyers bid keenly from the very off. Whilst the sky-high prices of the previous year (£5,000) weren’t on the go, there were 7 consignors who sold at over the £1,000 barrier.

Results followed the show, ably judged by Mr Paul Slater with his champion selling at £3,000 from Mr R Rennie, Sydenham, who’s brilliant consignment of 22 ave a very impressive £1,284.

Leading prices and flock averages were: Sydenham £3,000, £2,500; Acreknowe Cottage £2,200 ave £850 for 9 sold. Crumhaughhill £1,800 ave £939 for 25 sold; Falla £1,500 ave £787 for 50 sold; Skelfhill £1,500 ave £950 for 5 sold; Bowsden Moor £1,250; Catslackburn £1,150, £1,100, £1,050 ave £679 for 28 sold; Roxburgh Mains £950 ave £825 for 12 sold; Muircleugh £950 ave 791 for 6 sold.

Crumhaughhill smash the record unregistered Texel price with a £5,000 bid.

Border Livestock Exchange Ltd sold 233 Texel Shearling Rams in Ring 18 on Friday past at The Annual Kelso Ram Sales.
Bidding was keen from the start , with several buyers securing their rams from regular vendors with past knowledge of how well they breed.
The highlight of the sale was the fantastic consignment of 24 rams from Allan and Hazel Smith Crumhaughhill Farm, Hawick. Their much talked about pen sold to average a remarkable £1,341, their top prices were £5,000 to Mr Paul Slater, Macclesfield closely followed at £4,000 to Mr John Gray, Unthank Farm, Alnwick, £2,000 again to noted breeder Paul Slater with border farmers M/s Fullerton Corsbie , Earlston securing one at £1,800.

At the show kindly sponsored by Tarff Valley Feeds and held prior to the sale on Thursday night. The difficult task of finding a winner was ably undertaken by Mr James and Peter Fleming Lochside Farm, Yetholm , Kelso.

The Robert Smith Photography Trophy presented for the best pen was won by Lot 13 Sharplaw Farms , Hownam , Kelso. This consignment backed up it’s award with an increase of £189 on the year to average £713.
